TOLERANCE IN ART

14. March 2009 - 26. April 2009 Joint Exhibition of Slovak and Hungarian Art
Curators: Júlia N. Mészáros, M. Horváthová, D. Srnenská

The exhibition project Tolerance in Art aimed to reflect and express a strong desire for an unbiased and free flow of artistic ideas and mutual understanding. Culture has the power to foster and fulfil the principle of tolerance. The broad range of the exhibition Tolerance in Art – 100 Slovak and 100 Hungarian Contemporary Artists was interesting from many viewpoints. In fact, it was not a curatorial project because it did not trace the artistic and aesthetic development or a particular period. The selection of works for an exhibition designed on such a large scale is based on specific criteria or on the choice made by the curators. The title of the exhibition – Tolerance in Art – clearly indicated our openness to the presentation of the widest selection of artists representing the contemporary art scene. The only limitation was the space of the museum. The exhibition also offered a unique opportunity, not negligible at present, to compare the development of contemporary art at an international level. The range and number of participating artists gave us a real insight into the spectrum of artistic activities. Tolerance in Art can be considered a highly topical and important exhibition because it demonstrated the connection between diversity and multilayered artistic expression from the perspective of contemporary artistic development.
